Born in 1855, Madame Phoebia Cheek Sullivan and her family made their way to Saluda, NC as part of the "Great Migration from Laurens, SC." She lived over 100 years and was a divine healer, herb doctor, prophet, and leader in Saluda, NC. Thousands of folks also traveled from across the country to be healed by Madame Sullivan. One of her proudest accomplishments was the establishment of Sullivan's Temple, built in 1948 by her son James Sullivan. Sullivan's Temple was built on the Sullivan Estate, 55 acres of land in Saluda, NC. Madame Sullivan lived on this land with her family and also allowed other black folks to build homes for their families there.

In 2020, The descendents of Phoebia Cheek Sullivan established the Madame Phoebia Cheek Sullivan Memorial Park, Inc. This 501 C3 non-profit corporation was formed to preserve the family land, restore The Sullivan Baptist Temple facade, develop a Nature Park with Trails, erect the Phoebia Cheek Sullivan Memorial.
Since then, we've grown into a powerful conservation movement in the Southeastern region of North Carolina with partners who share a common vision.
